Don't Ignore Me
Do you ever get the feeling that someone's watching you. And i don't mean glancing in your direction, or zoning out while their date's blabbing on and on about themselves. I mean watching. Intently staring so deep into your soul it's like they can hear all of your thoughts. I get that same feeling all the time.
It all started a couple years ago when I was sitting in my room just messing around on my computer. I was in high school and Facebook was the new big thing back then. It was extremely important to have an huge amount of friends on there so we all threw caution to the wind when it came to adding strangers onto our profiles. One day I got a friend request from some guy, we'll call him Harry. I didn't really think about who this Harry guy might be but I was struggling to get my number of friends up and added him.
Out of all of the people who added me I remembered his request only because his profile picture at the time made my skin crawl. It was a picture of a man, young, maybe early 20's? He had this creepy smile that made you want to run for the hills and his eyes were so dark. Typically in a profile picture its hard to see someone's eyes but in his case he was sitting so creepily close to his camera they were hard to miss.
I wish I could say I vaguely remember how this all started but unfortunately I remember all of it. All of the minute, gruesome details that remain to haunt me everyday of my life. "Hey, I know you don't know me but I figured this is a place to make friends so why not try, right?" That was the first message I've ever received from Harry. Me being the dumb, blonde teenager that I was, I responded. "Hey! No worries! I'm down for any new friends."
The next couple of months went great. We'd message back and forth here and there but eventually things took a turn for the worst. Facebook starting fading to twitter so I barely used my account anymore and since I never gave Harry my number we never talked. I guess that made him really upset because that's when he decided to ruin my life.
I got bored one day and decided to see what was up on my Facebook. Whenever I opened it I saw I had 50 messages from Harry. I knew then that something was up. I hadn't been on in a month and if someone hasn't answered you that long there was no reason to send them 50 messages. Stupid me opened the message box and began to read through them. They started off soft. You know, the simple "Hey" or "I haven't heard from you in a bit, how are you?" but as the number of days without a response adds up the tone in his words heightened an outrageous amount. "I don't know why you're ignoring me." He said. Which isn't weird but what he said after made my heart drop so far into my stomach I thought I was going to have to get surgery to nail it back into my chest. On November 13, 2009 Harry sent "If you're going to sit on your computer all night I don't see why you can't answer me." That was the night I was studying for a big test in my History class. How did he know I was on my computer? I never told him my address, I mean I was stupid but not that stupid. I decided then just to block him from my account and to go on with my life.
But he didn't stop there. About a week later I got a text from an unknown number. "Hey, Erica. Guess who? I got your number from a friend. I hope my Facebook messages didn't scare you too much I was just going through a hard time." I almost threw up. He has my number now? I just deleted the text and went on with my day. That night I got another text from the same unknown number. "Alright, Erica, I get those messages were creepy but just answer me." I deleted that text as well and went on writing my paper for English. "Okay well I guess and English paper is really important so I'll let you ignoring me slide this time."
How the fuck does he know that I'm writing a paper for English? Is he hacking my computer? My windows and doors are locked and my parents are home so there's no way he's in my house. Right? I decided maybe it was a good guess and went to bed.
When I woke up the next morning my breath caught in my throat. On my window were the words "Answer me, Erica. -Harry" I couldn't believe it. This had to be a prank. I had to have left my Facebook logged on to someone's computer and my friends saw the messages and are pranking me. There's no way this is actually happening to me. I texted all of my friends and none of them knew what I was talking about. I decided then that enough was enough and I ran downstairs to tell my dad what was going on. By the time we got back upstairs the words were gone from my window and my dad thought I was lying for attention. Great. But how did those words just disappear? Did I dream that? I guess.
A couple weeks went by and nothing happened. I was so relieved to go back to normal life of twitter, homework and hanging out with friends that I didn't even think twice when my parents told me they were going away for the weekend. I decided to throw a party. Like any other teenager would.
All of my friends came over and we started setting up snacks and drinks and my friend Hailey was in charge of making fun playlists for everyone to listen to. By 8 o clock everyone started piling into my house. Everyone was chatting and dancing and having a good time. There were a lot of people there that I didn't really know, but I didn't really mind until I noticed the guy in the corner, inbetween the fireplace and the sliding back door. He was tall and thin. He had sandy blonde hair and those... those dark eyes. It was him. It had to be. I knew instantly that I had to get out of there but at that time he had started walking towards me. My hands were sweating profusely and my knees felt like they were gonna give up on me faster than my brother gave up playing the trumpet. But he just walked right past me and out the door. Weird I thought but maybe he's given up. Maybe he didn't know it was me.
Later that night when the last group of kids left I decided to go up into my room and sleep. The house was a mess but I figured I'd clean it up in the morning seeing as if I tried to clean it now I'd probably make it worse. I washed the makeup off of my face, put on my pj's and made my way into my bedroom. Right as I was about to close the door to my room I heard one of the cups crinkle as if someone stepped on it from downstairs. I froze. Maybe it was Hailey coming in to get her wallet or something. "Hai?" I called. No answer. I decided it was my imagination and shut my bedroom door.
I woke up around 3 am to my front door slamming shut. I thought maybe it was a dream but when I looked out my window and saw someone running through my yard I knew it wasn't. It was a tall and slim figure and I had no doubt in my mind that it was him. Harry. He was the one who stepped on the cup. He's been in my house for the past two hours, what the hell did he do? I decided to get up to investigate but right as I was about to stand I saw him turn quickly and stare at my bedroom window. He got that same twisted smile on his face and waved. I couldn't move. I couldn't breathe. I thought maybe I was going to die but he was out there and I was in here. Suddenly there was a flash and he took a picture of me. He started laughing as he ran down the road and I got a text saying "bet you won't ignore me now."
I ran downstairs to find my house destroyed. How didn't any of this noise wake me up? I looked at the counter and found them. He drugged me. He put a sleeping pill in my drink and then came back after the party to destroy the place? All because I ignored him? Thats when I found it. Or her, rather. There was a girl tied up in my living room. Obviously drugged like I was. Except she was starting to come out of it too. Next to her was a note. "You want to keep ignoring me, Erica? Maybe you'll end up like her." I saw another flash out of the corner of my eye and I turned to find Harry about my back door. The same twisted smile from ear to ear and he raised his hand to motion the creepiest wave. It was then that I noticed he reached for the handle of the back door. I wanted to run to keep it shut but I was too late. The last thing I remember is a flash. And now I'm here. I don't know what day it is. Or how long it's been. All I know is I'm sitting here tied to a computer chair in another girls room with a note that says "If you want to ignore me Caitlyn, you might just end up like Erica."
